A harlequin set of 8 beech and elm bar-back chairs. Circa 1870-1900.Elm and beech bar-back chairs. Attributed to the High Wycombe area.
Three-ring turned front legs, with lower ring, and straight-turned feet.
Sawn and shaped back uprights with elm seat, with a plain curved top rail and splat.
Two of the chairs are stamped AH and WB, which from information from the census from this period would be William Barratt, a chairmaker from High Wycombe up to 1907, and Alfred Hick, who was 25 years old in 1861 and was also listed as a chairmaker from High Wycombe.
All of the joints are sound and the woodwork has been cleaned/ sealed with shellac, and waxed.
